As a Miami narcotics detective, Leah Daniels never knows how her day will turn out. But she certainly never expected to be strapped to a stone altar, the human sacrifice in an ancient Mayan ritual meant to coax up a demon from the underworld. Or that she’d be saved by a handsome warrior-priest king who claims to recognize her from his visions...

Jaguar Strike wishes he hadn’t made the mistake of reuniting his fellow warrior priests, or broken the law by saving their chosen human sacrifice. Now, he has no choice but to join forces with Leah and invoke dangerous magic in a death-defying race against the end of time.
Don't delay, enter now for your chance to win!!

TBR Day: The Duke and I by Julia Quinn

Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, has sworn never to marry. Daphne Bridgerton has sworn to marry only for love. They make a bargain and fake a courtship to keep the ton's matchmakers at bay--but what happens when the charade becomes all too real?

Pub. Date: 2000
Publisher: HarperCollins
Series: Bridgerton Series #1

I’ve had the Duke and I in my tbr pile for a while now. I like series, I like historical romances, so I don’t know why it collected dust for so long. But ah well, I’ve read it, so it’s all good. What’s also good is the fact that I have the rest of the series in my tbr pile. Hee!

So needless to say, I enjoyed the Duke and I. Daphne and Simon are great characters, and the chemistry between them was fun. Can we say witty banter? I love witty banter.

Simon and Daphne first meet when Daphne knocks an amorous suitor flat on his back. He was a wee bit too insistent so Daphne knocks him out cold. Simon thought he was coming to her aid when she took matters into her own hands. (I like practical heroines.) Right from the get-go there are sparks. But when Simon realizes Daphne is his friend Anthony’s sister, he quickly backpedals.

But Simon and Daphne are brought together time and again, and sick of the marriage-hungry mommas, these two hatch a plan to pretend to be in luuurve so people leave them the heck alone. A tired plot device, but I swear, Quinn made it fresh and new and fun. Because the characters are fun. And the secondary characters (like the brothers) are interesting and I can’t wait to get to their books.

So yeah, they have this scheme, only it turns around and bites them on the ass because they fall in love. But the conflict doesn’t end there. Because Simon used to stutter as a child, and he’s worked very hard as an adult to hide it and he’s worried about Daphne’s reaction and what she’ll think about him if he knows.

Awww! And the beauty in that is that the conflict is internal and character driven and no one is getting kidnapped or spying for England or any other madcap thing that can go on. It was simple, engaged my emotions and it was fun.
